About this data

Local businesses by size group, plus solo owners. We only compare what public data can back. Call volume, answer speed and close rates are not in public data, so we do not guess.

Average across businesses with employees

About this data

Yearly payroll divided by paid employees. Hidden where a county has fewer than 10 businesses with employees, because one large payroll can skew it.

About this data: sources and methods

Notes. Business counts and payroll jobs come from the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns (mid-March counts). Counts under 3 businesses are not published, to protect individual businesses; we show them as "Too few to report", never as 0. Solo businesses come from Census Nonemployer Statistics; where a detailed count is not published for a county, we use the wider category and say so. Permit counts are single-family homes and include Census estimates for places that did not report. Wages come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and exclude benefits, payroll taxes and self-employed workers. Pay per worker is hidden where a county has fewer than 10 businesses with employees. Metro areas are labeled by their main city, for example "Jackson, MS metro area". Methodology
