Weekly status-update drafts for every open matter

Each Friday, Cowork reads the week's notes and activity on open matters and drafts a short status email per client for the responsible attorney to review.

For: Small law firmsBy John DietrichUpdated

The problem

The most common client complaint about lawyers is not hearing from them. Attorneys know this, but writing a status note for every open matter each week is hours they bill elsewhere.

What Cowork does

  1. A Friday task reads the week's notes, tasks and calendar entries for open matters in Clio through Composio (if available), or from a weekly matter report in Drive.
  2. It drafts a plain-language update per client: what happened this week, what's next, anything needed from them.
  3. Matters with no activity get a short 'nothing new, here's what we're waiting on' draft.
  4. Drafts are grouped by responsible attorney.

Where the draft lands

Drafts in the attorney's inbox, grouped by matter.

What stays with you

Reviewing every update for accuracy and privilege before sending.

Draft updateExample · Okafor Law is fictional

Hi Grace, a quick update on your deposit matter. This week we sent the demand letter to Cornerstone Property Management. They have 14 days to respond. Nothing is needed from you right now. We'll update you next Friday or sooner if they reply. Attorney Okafor

Watch-outs

  • Privilege and accuracy: an attorney reviews each draft. Never send automatically.
  • Some matters shouldn't get written updates at all. Mark them excluded.

Questions owners ask

Will clients know it's AI-drafted?

They get an email the attorney reviewed and sent.

Does it bill the time?

Firms decide that. Check your bar's guidance on billing for AI-assisted work.
